If you’re a mother, then you are well aware of how blissful it can be to give birth to your brand new baby. In an instant, your life changes as you go from tending to only yourself, to having a new life that is the center of your universe. Your priorities certainly shift and life usually takes a turn for the better.
For the first time ever, a mother orangutan was filmed giving birth to her baby, and while the footage is graphic, it is a beautiful thing to witness, especially when you see the mama showing off her baby at the end of the clip.
In a moment that appears to go far smoother than that of a human birth, the mama orangutan can be seen pushing for just a few seconds before the baby emerges from her. As soon as the baby arrives, she goes to work removing the amniotic sac from the tiny body. The mama knows exactly what to do as she removes the sac with ease.
We then see the baby moving, and mama picks her up and clears its airways, cradling her much in the same way that a human mom would.
You can hear the staff at the Durrell Wildlife Conservative Trust watching on in awe in the background.
“Oh, she’s an amazing mother, look at her,” one staff member says as the mother uses her mouth to clean the baby off. At this point, the baby starts making her first sounds, which triggers the father to get involved, and we can hear him letting out a slight roar in the background.
And then, in an amazing moment, the mother carries the baby over to the staff and sits down in front of them, as if she is showing her newborn off.
It’s amazing to see how similar this mama orangutan is to a human mom when she carries her to the staff.
Commenters shared their thoughts on the birth…
“Amazing. No Lamaze class. No education. No healthcare. But the mom knows exactly what to do.”
“That was beautiful, I’m in love with Orangutans. How can silly people (creationists) deny we have a common ancestor? I’m very proud of my ape relatives and think they’re beautiful. You only have to look at them to see the similarities between us, especially their mannerisms and intelligence, watching her unblocking the babies airwaves was amazing. I love nature and all its creations.”
“No human intervention, God’s internal programming (instincts) tells the animals what to do. Now, if there were just less intervention for human births too. Also notice she assumes a squatting position, where women in North America lay on their backs against gravity. So much can be learned from animals because they follow God’s programming, but I thank God we don’t have to eat the placenta and amniotic sac. whew!”
“WOW, that is amazing footage! What a wonderful mom! Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us!!”
Hopefully, there will be a follow-up video so we can see how mama and baby are doing later on.
